Forte is in the final year of his rookie contract and is getting paid $600,000 this season. Compare that to Chris Johnson who just renegotiated his deal, and pocketed $30M in guarantees. Forte has no such guarantees, and because of that and the great success in his early career, he asked for an extension. He was told that he is under contract, and should play out his contract. That is leaving several players on the Bears wondering about how they are being treated by the ownership group led by general manager Jerry Angelo. Either way it turns out, Matt Forte is getting more and more expensive each game he plays.
I am really doing my best to digest this news with a business attitude. Well, I am not so sure that this was the best choice. Lets take a look.
There are no guarantees of a career in the NFL, though, far from it. The Falcons currently boast a squad of more than 90 players, which must be cut to 53 before the start of the season in September. The nature of American football means many will have their careers ended before they’ve even begun, but Gray finds himself in the privileged position of having a guaranteed year long deal, while most players are at the mercy of being cut each and every day.

A NFL coach is one of the most high profile positions in sports. Coaches are shown on television and get quoted in the newspapers. Even assistant coaches are in the spotlight. Wood Selig has been an athletic director for 18 eventful years, the first 11 at Western Kentucky, the last seven at Old Dominion. Eventful because he transitioned each of those schools from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision, no easy task. Eventful because he effected coaching changes in football and men’s basketball. At WKU, Selig hired and fired David Elson as football coach and replaced him with Willie Taggart, now at Oregon. Both of his basketball hires at Western, Darrin Horn and Ken McDonald, advanced the Hilltoppers in the NCAA tournament. Virginia is a higher profile job than ODU, but Selig, a Washington Lee graduate, grew up in Norfolk, has family there and is entrenched in the Monarchs’ campaign to raise money for a football stadium overhaul.
